Cink, Simpson, Moore Tied for Lead at Quail Hollow
Tiger, Rory and Phil were back out on the PGA Tour Thursday, but after Day One of the Wells Fargo Championship, three of the world's most famous golfers were looking up at those at the top of the leader board.
Woods and Mickelson were in a group of 24 players tied for 56th after shooting 1-under par 71s in ideal scoring conditions at Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. Meanwhile, McIlroy was in a 17-way tie for 39th at 2-under.
The top rung of leader board is shared by three players - Ryan Moore, Webb Simpson, and former British Open champion Stewart Cink - who opened by shooting 7-under par 65s at the Quail Hollow Club in Charlotte. One stroke back at 6-under is a group of five players, including 2006 John Deere Classic champ John Senden, Pekin, Ill. native D.A. Points, the always sartorially splendid Rickie Fowler, England's Brian Davis, and rookie Patrick Reed of back-to-back NCAA champion Augusta State, and who Monday qualified for the event.
Simpson, who lives within a mile of the course, played in a threesome with Woods and former U.S. Open champion Geoff Ogilvy, and he seemed to thrive under the pressure. He chipped in from 35 yard for eagle on the par 4 eighth and rolled in a 62-foot birdie putt. "I was nervous playing with Tiger," Simpson said. "Once I made a couple of birdies, I kind of enjoyed it."
The good news for the more famous golfers they have Friday to make the cut and start working their ways up the leader board.
